The seminars subjects are: The Enemies of Artwork, Conservation Framing and Textile Framing; the subjects of the Master Classes revolve around the Valiani computerised mount cutter and explain how to produce Russian Geometric Designs and their conversion into geometric borders around mount apertures. In addition, I continue to write articles for Arqadia's 4Walls Magazine under the title of Mal's Master Class, the most recent of which describes the methods of producing thick bevelled mounts and their uses.  If you haven't a copy then please contact Arqadia - there is a link on this website.

13 October 2012
- On 8th November I have been asked to sit on an 'Ask the Experts,' panel at the North East Branch event of the Fine Art Trade Guild.

- It has been a busy couple of months, having just returned from a narrow boat holiday on the Leicester Branch of the Grand Union Canal and lecturing at 'The Collection' Lincoln, the Moscow International Framers Forum(MIFF) and the Framers Forum Live in the UK. Back in the workshop with almost a clear run up to Christmas.

- The Framers Forum Live took place in late Sep; I was invited to sit on a very successful 'Ask the Experts' panel followed by a lecture on 'Framing Myths Explained' which covered two articles I wrote for 'Art Business Today.' The presentation and articles are available under 'Articles.'

- I was fortunate to be invited to lecture, in early Sep, at the MIFF by NeoArt one of Russia's major framing suppliers. I gave six lectures, the subjects were ‘Textiles and Textile Framing’ and ‘Colours in Framing.’ I also completed three Master Classes on conservation hinging and two on the Valiani CMC featuring the use of the MatStylus Deluxe in producing the ‘Casa Gennari Style mounts’ featured in the last issue of Picture Business. In all between 600-700 framers registered for the Forum, with over 70 entries in the framing competition and in excess of 50 framers attending lectures. An outstanding event that showed poorly the Spring Fair and UK Trade Shows were attended.

- In July I gave a lecture and demonstration at 'The Collection' Lincoln, on Casa Gennari style mount panels. These panels are reproductions of the panels that decorated a number of sketches from the studio of Italian baroque artist Guercino. Guercino lived and worked in Northern Italy, period 1591 - 1661 and is considered on of Italy's Grand Masters.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

16 May 2012
- Mal has just been elected as the Chair of the Fine Art Trade Guild's Framers Committee.  This Committee sets and regulates the standards of the Guild's framing programme known as the Guild Commended Framer (GCF).  The GCF offers basic and three advanced level qualifications; Conservation and Textile framing and Mount Design and Function of which Mal is one of only six UK framers that hold two, which are Conservation and Textile Framing.

11 April 2012
- Casa Gennari mounts originate from the studio of the 17th Century Italian artist Giovanni Barbieri, more commonly known as Guercino.  The mounts complemented a number of Guercino's sketches and are a stunning display of the outstanding draughtsmanship of Guercino, who is widely regarded as one of the most significant artists of the Baroque period.

Mal has accurately recreated a number of these mounts using Valiani's MatStylus Deluxe pen head and, as an example, the Classical/triangles mount has some 266 lines that make up the pattern.  The still life portraits are the work of Nancy Fletcher - www.fletcherfineart.com.

It is interesting that, by using lines as shading, a number of different designs/patterns can be constructed. There are more designs to come when I have the time.

- Mal adds the Advanced Accreditation (Adv Acc) in Conservation Framing to his qualifications, scoring exceptionally high marks in both the written and practical disciplines.
- The only Lincolnshire-based framer to hold both this Adv Acc and its sister qualification in Textile framing.
- Mal is one of only 6 framers in the UK that hold two of the three Adv Acc.

Mal states – "I have for some time written articles and given seminars on conservation framing and thought it was about time I sat the Fine Art Trade Guild’s examination on this subject.  It is important for customers to have confidence that their framer is fully qualified, understands conservation techniques and, of course, employs these techniques with the very best quality materials when framing their artwork to this prestigious level"

July 2011
Mal's article on Framing Myths explained – Mountboard published in June's Art Business Today gains praise from the Alan Yaffe President of Peterboro Matboards Canada; stating:

- "Being a mountboard manufacturer I am always pleased to read articles such as yours."
- "I have also read a number of articles in North American framing magazines that were totally inaccurate about papermaking and matboard composition which only adds to the confusion."
- "I would like to thank you for your accuracy and for helping to set the record straight on mountboard for framers."

Read the article here.

July 2011
Mal continues to write as a columnist for Picture Business – the next article 'On Top of the World' explains how he uses the Valiani computerised mount cutter to enhance the mount design using an open 'V' groove and text box.

Open 'V' grooves along with deep bevels add an extra dimension to your artwork – ask Mal to demonstrate on your next visit.

See an example of such a mount here.
